The Origin of Jin Jun Mei
One of the legends states that while walking on the mountain slopes of Wuyishan with his guests, a tea master stumbled upon a wild bush with blossoming buds that gave off a unique aroma. He picked a handful of these buds and took them home, where he transformed them into the world-famous Golden Eyebrow Tea.
Another legend attributes the creation of Jin Jun Mei to the tea master Liang Jun De. He improved and modified the technological process of producing the classic Chinese tea variety, Lapsang Souchong, by eliminating the stage of smoking on pine branches.
The third theory suggests that all the legends about the tea’s creation are nothing more than a marketing ploy. According to its proponents, the market needed a new, expensive, and prestigious tea, which became the Golden Eyebrows variety developed by a team of experienced specialists.
Jin Jun Mei is made exclusively from young tea buds harvested by hand in the spring from the mountainsides of Wuyishan in Fujian Province. Its production is a complicated, laborious, and painstaking process, which involves collecting at least 130-140,000 tender buds to produce 1 kg of raw material. The main stages of production include harvesting the young buds, curing, crushing, fermenting, and drying.
