Top Tea Exporters in North America

In 2021, the total export value of tea in North America reached $130 million. Among the countries in the region, the United States emerged as the largest tea exporter with a total value of $89.5 million. Following the United States, Canada accounted for $31.4 million in tea exports, while Jamaica contributed $3.79 million, Mexico contributed $1.66 million, and Costa Rica contributed $1.06 million.

1. United States

In 2021, the United States exported $89.5 million worth of tea, positioning itself as the 15th largest tea exporter globally. Within the United States, tea ranked 738th among the most exported products. The primary destinations for tea exports from the United States were Canada ($46.7 million), Japan ($4.05 million), Germany ($3.82 million), Mexico ($3.33 million), and the Netherlands ($3.24 million).

During the period from 2020 to 2021, the United States experienced significant growth in its tea export markets, particularly in Canada ($2.14 million), the Netherlands ($1.6 million), and Germany ($1.41 million).

2. Canada

In 2021, Canada exported $31.4 million worth of tea, ranking as the 25th largest tea exporter globally. Tea held the 562nd position among Canada’s most exported products that year. The primary destinations for Canada’s tea exports were the United States ($28.6 million), Morocco ($514,000), Ireland ($305,000), the United Kingdom ($291,000), and the Netherlands ($189,000).

Notably, Canada experienced significant growth in its tea export markets between 2020 and 2021, with Morocco leading the way at an increase of $412,000, followed by Ireland at $302,000, and the Netherlands at $178,000.

3. Jamaica

In 2021, Jamaica exported $3.79 million worth of tea, positioning itself as the 61st largest tea exporter globally. Among Jamaica’s most exported products, tea held an impressive 32nd position. The main destinations for Jamaica’s tea exports were the United States ($1.32 million), Barbados ($762,000), Canada ($291,000), Trinidad and Tobago ($280,000), and Guyana ($213,000).

Jamaica experienced notable growth in its tea export markets between 2020 and 2021, particularly in Barbados with an increase of $310,000, followed by Canada at $65,400, and the Bahamas at $48,800.

4. Mexico

In 2021, Mexico exported $1.66 million worth of tea, making it the 73rd largest tea exporter globally. Tea ranked as the 859th most exported product in Mexico that year. The primary destinations for Mexico’s tea exports were the United States ($1.33 million), El Salvador ($100,000), Belize ($74,900), Costa Rica ($45,300), and Nicaragua ($33,400).

Mexico witnessed noteworthy growth in its tea export markets between 2020 and 2021, particularly in Belize with an increase of $31,600, followed by Gambia at $9,840, and Canada at $6,400.

5. Costa Rica

In 2021, Costa Rica exported $1.06 million worth of tea, positioning itself as the 83rd largest tea exporter globally. Among Costa Rica’s most exported products, tea held the 338th position. The primary destinations for Costa Rica’s tea exports were Nicaragua ($644,000), El Salvador ($209,000), Guatemala ($93,500), Panama ($42,500), and Honduras ($26,400).

Costa Rica experienced notable growth in its tea export markets between 2020 and 2021, particularly in Canada with an increase of $8,270, followed by the Dominican Republic at $8,040, and the United States at $6,050.

6. Honduras

In 2021, Honduras exported $581,000 worth of tea, making it the 91st largest tea exporter globally. Tea ranked as the 275th most exported product in Honduras that year. The main destinations for Honduras’ tea exports were Guatemala ($580,000), the United States ($851), Sweden ($224), the Cayman Islands ($77), and Ireland ($35).

Honduras witnessed significant growth in its tea export markets between 2020 and 2021, particularly in Guatemala with an increase of $175,000, followed by the United States at $534, and Sweden at $224.
