Between 2020 and 2021, the global exports of tea experienced a growth of 5.06%, reaching a value of $8.13 billion compared to $7.74 billion. Tea trade accounted for 0.039% of the total world trade. In 2021, the leading tea exporters were China with $1.97 billion, Sri Lanka with $1.34 billion, Kenya with $1.2 billion, India with $709 million, and the United Arab Emirates with $316 million.

In 2021, China emerged as the top exporter of Tea worldwide, with tea exports reaching $1.97 billion. Tea ranked as the 276th most exported product in China that year. The primary destinations for China’s tea exports were Hong Kong ($460 million), Morocco ($214 million), Malaysia ($185 million), Vietnam ($107 million), and Ghana ($103 million).

Among these destinations, Hong Kong experienced the most significant growth in tea imports from China between 2020 and 2021, with an increase of $188 million. Malaysia followed suit with a growth of $44 million, and Ghana saw a notable increase of $23.5 million in tea imports from China.

2. Sri Lanka

In 2021, Sri Lanka solidified its position as the second-largest exporter of Tea globally, with tea exports amounting to $1.34 billion. Tea stood out as Sri Lanka’s topmost exported product during the same year. The primary destinations for Sri Lanka’s tea exports were Iraq ($147 million), Russia ($122 million), Turkey ($105 million), the United Arab Emirates ($98.4 million), and Iran ($75.8 million).

Notably, the United Arab Emirates experienced significant growth in tea imports from Sri Lanka between 2020 and 2021, with an increase of $58.6 million. Iraq followed suit with a growth of $34.7 million, and Libya saw a notable increase of $19.1 million in tea imports from Sri Lanka.

3. Kenya

In 2018, Kenya had a significant tea export value of $1.2 billion, ranking as the world’s third-largest tea exporter. Tea also stood out as the top exported product in Kenya during the same year. The primary destinations for Kenyan tea exports were Pakistan, with an export value of $471 million, followed by Egypt with $170 million, the United Kingdom with $114 million, the United Arab Emirates with $68 million, and Russia with $49.8 million.
