The primary destinations for Vietnam’s tea exports include Pakistan, with exports valued at $72.1 million, followed by Chinese Taipei at $28.8 million, Russia at $20 million, China at $14 million, and Iraq at $9.87 million.

Vietnam experienced notable growth in its tea exports between 2020 and 2021. The fastest-growing export markets for Vietnam’s tea during this period were Iraq, witnessing an increase of $4.24 million, followed by Pakistan with a growth of $2.87 million, and China with a surge of $2.78 million. These markets demonstrate the expanding demand for Vietnamese tea globally.

Tea Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, Vietnam imported tea valued at $182 million, positioning it as the 16th largest importer of tea in the world. On Vietnam’s import list, tea ranked as the 287th most imported product. The primary sources of Vietnam’s tea imports were China with imports worth $107 million, Hong Kong at $34.3 million, Malaysia at $27.4 million, Indonesia at $4.19 million, and Sri Lanka at $1.77 million.

Emerging Import Markets

Vietnam witnessed significant growth in its tea imports between 2020 and 2021. The fastest-growing import markets for tea in Vietnam during this period were Hong Kong, experiencing a notable increase of $9.45 million, followed by Malaysia with a growth of $6.52 million, and Sri Lanka with a rise of $669,000. These figures reflect the evolving patterns of tea consumption in Vietnam.

Tariffs on Tea

In 2018, Vietnam had an average tariff rate of 37.2% on tea imports. Among the countries with the highest import tariffs for tea were Angola, Burundi, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Botswana, all imposing a Most Favored Nation duty rate treatment of 40%. These tariff rates contribute to the overall trade dynamics and impact the flow of tea imports into Vietnam.
